PE & Sports

At Alma Primary, we are becoming phenomenal with physical education!

We believe that physical education should be exciting, challenging and meet the needs of all learners in a safe and support environment. We teach that physical and mental health work together to support the holistic health and wellbeing development of us all. Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at Alma Primary, not only through the sporting skills taught, the knowledge and understanding acquired and the experience provided, but through the underpinning values and disciplines that PE promotes.

Our PE curriculum ensures that the lessons planned cover the requirements of and provide opportunity for progression across the full breadth of the PE National Curriculum and EYFS Early Learning Goals for Physical Development for both indoor and outdoor PE. In Reception and Key Stage 1, the focus of the PE curriculum is on the development of the fundamental skills that will be built upon in Key Stage 2 when they are applied in specific sports. Revisiting prior learning is an integral part of all PE lessons to build depth and develop skill. Our playground also has a variety of physical structures and spaces to encourage physical activity outside of the PE lessons too.

It is our intention to develop a lifelong love of physical activity, sport and PE in all our learners, with high quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in developing physical education life skills. We aim to help ensure a positive and healthy physical and mental outlook in the future and help young people to develop essential skills like leadership, cooperation and teamwork. Within each lesson, we strive to give every child the opportunity to develop skills in PE, consider the impact on their health and fitness, both mentally and physically, compete/perform and evaluate. Activities are adapted to suit the learner’s needs to ensure that all learning is inclusive and accessible. We want to teach children skills that keep them safe, such as being able to swim, understand fairness and equity of play and embed our Alma ethos values of kindness and respect.

Our children are incredibly enthusiastic about competing in Barnet borough and Maccabi events and our achievements and trophies can be seen in our Alma office hallway trophy cabinet! The children also have the opportunity to attend a variety of extra-curricular PE lunch and after school clubs to further extend their knowledge, understanding and skills. You can find out more about our clubs here.
