History

Our exploration of history at Alma Primary, helps our children to become reflective historians! 

We want Alma children to be curious and questioning about the past, both in Britain and the wider world. Our curriculum inspires children to ask searching questions about what life was like and helps them to develop historical knowledge, skills and understanding of how diverse cultures nationally and internationally have developed over time.

History enables children to respect and appreciate the diversity of societies and beliefs, celebrate difference and change, take pride in their own historical journey and learn more about the complexities of people’s lives. Our thematic curriculum links history to varied topics such as medicine and democracy, enabling Alma children to develop their familiarity with significant events and people through time and around the world.

 

By encouraging children to research, enquire, interpret evidence from a range of primary and secondary resources, explore historical evidence, and explain their ideas, our children learn how the past shapes the world in which we live and influences the decisions that we make.

Geography

Our work exploring peoples and places enables Alma child to become curious geographers!

Geography helps to provoke and provide answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world. We want our children to develop a deep understanding of the world, and of their place in it. Our geography curriculum enables children to develop understanding, knowledge and skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas, as well as promoting their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

At Alma, we inspire children with a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people which will remain with them for the rest of their lives. We want our children to learn about the wider world as well as their local area and to understand the similarities and differences between different countries, cultures and areas. Our study of geography promotes the children’s interest and understanding of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. Our thematic curriculum is designed to enable Alma children to develop knowledge and skills that are progressive, as well as transferable, so that their primary learning extends into their next stage of education and beyond.

RE

Our investigation of world religions at Alma Primary helps our children become understanding citizens! We learn about, explore and appreciate the beliefs and practices of people from our community, our country and all around the world!

At Alma Primary we ensure that our RE curriculum is authentic and challenging, providing memorable experiences and learning. Through RE assemblies and trips, our children meet people and faith leaders from a variety of religions and explore the similarities and differences. These include the clothing people wear, cooking and tasting food from different faiths and experiencing celebrations from across the religious spectrum. 

We see Religious Education (RE) as an opportunity to understand how others interpret our world through the lens of religion. Our curriculum encourages our children to learn about the variety of ways that people around London and around the world practice their faiths. 

Children at Alma learn to appreciate and respect different ways of marking life cycle events as well as seasonal festivals. This includes New Year celebrations, light in winter, the harvest season, as well as holidays and festivals that are unique to specific religions. 

Through exposure to different ways of understanding and appreciating our world, our children learn how to respect and learn from our multicultural and multi faith society, encouraging them to be open-minded, curious and respectful members of multicultural Britain.
