Black History Month

Art and Topic

Year 1 have been learning that October is Black History Month. This is a time when we celebrate black people’s contributions to our history. We learnt that, all too often, black people are treated unfairly and this isn’t something that just happened in the past. Things are better, but there is still a long way to go. Year 1 worked in pairs to complete jigsaw puzzles of famous black people who have helped bring about a change: Alice Dearing; Rosa Parks; Martin Luther King Jr and Bayard Rustin.

The children learnt about Alma Woodsey Thomas- an African-American artist and teacher who was the first African-American woman to hold a fine arts degree. She was fascinated by space and the moon landings. Year 1 have loved learning about her abstract style and have created their own versions of her painting, “The Eclipse.”
